What is Betta Fish about

THE STORY

Elle has always believed that hard work was her way forward. Freshly graduated from college, she returns home with plans to leave again soon, hoping to build the life she has carefully imagined. Home is meant to be temporary, but it quickly becomes unfamiliar. Her mother Annette is struggling with her mental health in ways Elle cannot fully understand, and the stability of their household begins to quietly erode.

When Annette disappears, the fragile balance holding the family together collapses. With no clear answers and little support, Elle becomes responsible for her younger sister Cassidy. The future Elle planned, including her dreams of leaving home, begins to feel increasingly distant as the demands of care and survival take over her days.

As the sisters navigate life on their own, grief settles unevenly between them. Elle carries the weight of responsibility while mourning both her mother and the life she thought she was moving toward. Cassidy, still caught between childhood and awareness, looks to her sister for reassurance even as both struggle to adapt to their new reality. Their bond is tested by exhaustion, resentment, and a love that endures even when it feels heavy.

Betta Fish is an intimate portrait of sisterhood, resilience, and the quiet ways grief, love, and responsibility can reshape a life.

THE FILMMAKER

Louvinia, writer and director of Betta Fish and founder of Maddox Films

Betta Fish is a deeply personal story that mirrors my own journey through life's challenges. It explores the delicate balance between pursuing personal dreams and shouldering family responsibilities.

This film is about resilience, self discovery, and the strength found in the bonds we share. It is my way of offering hope, showing that no matter the obstacles, we can always find a way to push through and grow.

Making Betta Fish:
five days on set

THE MAKING OF

01

The Depths

Magic happened the day we filmed underwater. With more than 40 cast and crew on set, every department worked together to transform a swimming pool into an endless abyss using custom tarps, lighting, and careful production design. Lori even performed her own underwater work, bringing an incredible level of commitment to the scene.

Building a World

We transformed a small room into a vibrant aquarium store using color, light, and production design to create a calm underwater atmosphere. From her very first take, Latarsha completely drew everyone into the world, making the space feel alive.

Our final day of production became one of the film's most memorable. We created an entire rain sequence to heighten the emotion of the scene, carefully planning every setup knowing the cast would spend hours soaked. Erin Collett's cinematography turned the rain into one of the film's most striking visual moments.

Small Spaces

Some of our biggest challenges came in the smallest spaces. Shooting inside a cramped bedroom required every department to work together, finding creative camera angles and lighting solutions that made the intimate space feel cinematic. It was a true reminder that filmmaking is a team sport.

A Family Before “Action”

At the heart of Betta Fish is the bond between a mother and her daughters. From the very beginning, Lori, Latarsha, and Milanis built a genuine connection that carried through every scene, making every laugh, silence, and tear feel completely authentic.
